Biography of Oleksa Zakharchuk

Oleksa Zakharchuk was born in the town of Illintsi, Vinnytsia Region, on February 2nd, 1929.
1943–1944 – during the Second World War took part in the partisan movement in the Vinnytsia Region, in the 2nd Stalin partisan brigade.
1944–1948 – was at an orphanage in Kharkiv.
1945–1950 – studied at the Kharkiv Art School, the first participation in the regional art exhibition in Kharkiv (1949).
1950–1957 – studied at the Kyiv Institute of Fine Arts under T. Yablonska and S. Hryhoryev.
Since 1966 – member of the Artists Union of Ukraine, has been participating in republican, all-Union and international exhibitions.
1965–1966 – worked on monumental painting in the A. Gaidar Library-Museum in Kaniv.
1968 – participated in the dissident movement: signed the letter in defence of V. Chornovil, Ginsburg and Galansky, was persecuted.
2002 – winner of the Kyiv Shishko Art Prize in landscape painting.
Died on March 25th, 2013.
